Figuratives: Alone, Jack Gilbert

figuratives:

I never thought Michiko would come back
after she died. But if she did, I knew
it would be as a lady in a long white dress.
It is strange that she has returned
as somebody’s dalmatian. I meet
the man walking her on a leash
almost every week. He says good morning
and I stoop down to calm her. He…

Marroquin Marginalia: Facebook message to Obama

Lovely letter written by a friend. Points are thoughtful and truthful. I am reminded of the books on my bedside table that I have started and have not finished.  It nags at me every time I get into bed but feel too “tired” to read for long… Something’s gotta change.

Hello Barack (Or campaign worker),

I’m writing from Oklahoma City, surely one of the cities in America with a lower literacy rate.

I write to tell you that I bond with people I am ideologically opposed to over books. That is, reading. Yesterday me, a school teacher in an inner city school,…

Blue Valley Farmers' Assn. EP

An earlier album by Blue Valley Farmer and friends, and it is also a “name your price” digital download worth adding to your music rotation.  Get it.  My favorite is “Bluebirds/Bears”.  And “Out Midwest”.  And “And Yet, It Moves”.  Yeah.

Emmylou Harris, “To Daddy”

Loved this video and song in 1985.  Played it all the time. Too bad I can’t find the original song on Spotify. I really wanted it in my “Music Bio” playlist.  The “sound-alike” one doesn’t cut it for me. I can tell the difference in the voices; It doesn’t fool me.

One of my favorite songs from the 80s, Toto’s “Africa”.  Weird video, though it is pretty standard for that era.  Odd symbolism and abstractions…

I think this photo was used on the cover of one of Dolly’s greatest hits albums, but I can’t seem to find it again and locate photographer information.

Ryan Lawson and the Hack & Saw Nation

You can preview the songs on this page, but you can also download the whole album for only $5.  That’s certainly not much at all for some great songwriting and get-moving music.  My favorites are “Memories of Youth” and “Broken Record”, right now, but I am sure as I listen more to this album the favorite-song-of-the-moment will wing it to “One Year Ago” or “Stowaway” or one of the others.  The devil of the beast of good music is that one month one song fits your mood, then a month later you revisit the album and another song sounds brand-new and is newly-named THE appropriate song to describe your current emotional seat on the roller-coaster of life.  This album, or another by Ryan Lawson, is sure to fit that bill.  So go listen, purchase, download, listen some more, and go to some live shows if you’re able.  Great people to meet if you do.
